About
Throne of Lies The Online Game of Deceit is a 3D online multiplayer game where between 8 and 16 players must combine their social deduction skills with over 100 abilities to root out the traitors at the table and stop their foes from taking control of the kingdom.
In a modern take on tabletop games like Werewolf/Mafia and set during a time of medieval conflict, each player is randomly assigned one of 40+ classes, ranging from the King himself to a hapless Fool. Most players will be loyal members of the Blue Dragon faction, but each game will feature members of either the wicked Cult or mysterious Unseen faction, along with a few Neutral characters to mix things up.
The game is on PC, Mac, and Linux. Kickstarter and closed alpha started Early Q2 2017. The game launched on Steam on September 29th, 2017.

Game Objective
The objective of Throne of Lies is simple: eliminate the opposing faction. If you are a neutral character and have no faction, you will have a unique objective such as surviving until the end or eliminating everyone.
While members of the Cult and Unseen factions will know their allies, members of the Blue Dragon must be suspicious of every other player to ensure that they don’t fall to an evil plot. Even the King is suspect in Throne of Lies, as he could be working for the enemy.
How to Play (Quickstart)
Traitors, also known as the Unseen/Cult, are rumored to be plotting against Castle Adiart. The loyal members of The Blue Dragon faction must discover who is committing Treason by using their abilities, social deduction and various clues.
The first step of any Throne of Lies (ToL) game is to look at your player card (located in the top left corner of the screen) to determine what class you are and what faction you are a part of. Clicking on the card will reveal further information about your abilities and the abilities of the other classes.
Each day within the game is broken into two phases: Day and Night.
During the night phase, members of the evil faction will congregate in secret to discuss their findings and plot their next moves. This may include killing members of the Blue Dragon or converting them to their faction. They could also use their night abilities to disrupt the abilities of other players and leave them with false information.
Members of the Blue Dragon will return to their own rooms at night. Here they can use their night abilities to investigate, protect or occupy other players in an effort to determine their allegiance. Some classes, such as The Psychic, will be able to talk to others at night.
At the start of the day phase, you will learn which players died the previous night. All players will then return to the roundtable where they can discuss their investigation, use their day abilities and accuse others of treason. At the end of the day, one player may be put up for execution and the entire court will decide their fate.
It is very important to write all of this information, including how you use your own abilities, in your logbook. This will allow you to keep track of what’s going on and who is claiming which class. The logbook is also extremely important to other players. If you meet an unfortunate demise, the logbook will be revealed to all players and used to corroborate other information they’ve learned.
The Four Factions
In every game of Throne of Lies, one player is assigned to the role of The King. The King can be a member of any of the four factions and only he will know which faction he is a part of.
1) Blue Dragon: The good and noble leaders of Castle Adiart represent the Blue Dragon faction. Their goal is to defeat the Unseen or Cult members and any neutral players that attempt to eliminate them. Social deduction skills are most important to the Blue Dragon because they do not know which other players are their allies. At the start of every game, one player will be assigned the role of the Prince. In games featuring the Unseen, players may be assigned the role of Sheriff. In games featuring the Cult, players may be assigned the role of Paladin.
Only a select few members of the Blue Dragon have the ability to kill other players. Because of this, it is important to use the ability to execute players during the day and prevent their enemies from growing in power and numbers.
2) Unseen: The goal of the mysterious Unseen faction is to eliminate the members of the Blue Dragon and any neutral players that attempt to eliminate them. At the start of an Unseen game, two players will be assigned to the roles of the Mastermind and the Assassin. The Mastermind can convert players and turn them into evil versions of their original class. The Assassin can kill or poison other players to eliminate them from the game.
There can only be three members of the Unseen at any one time.
3) Cult: Like the Unseen, the goal of the evil Cult faction is to eliminate the members of the Blue Dragon and any neutral players that attempt to eliminate them. The Cult will only appear in games that have at least 11 players. At the start of a Cult game, one player will be assigned the role of Cult Leader and a second player will be either an Invoker, a Ritualist or a Seeker. The Cult Leader can brainwash other players to join the Cult as one of these three classes or an Apostle, based on their original class type.
There can only be four members of the Cult at any one time, but the Cult Leader can sacrifice members of his own faction to replenish his abilities and open up space for another convert.
4) Neutral: There are eight different neutral classes in Throne of Lies each with their own unique objective. While classes such as the Reaper, Possessor, Sorcerer, Inquisitor and Scorned must eliminate other players; the Fool, Mercenary and Alchemist have more selfish missions.
What's Special?
Throne of Lies attempts to further evolve the social deduction genre with two new dynamics.
At the start of every game, one player is assigned the role of King. The King can be a member of any faction, and only he knows where his loyalties stand. His highness can radically alter the game with an additional vote during executions and the ability to completely veto the results.
Because the King wields so much power, he is constantly under threat of assassination. He can also be poisoned by the Butler or voted up for treason after day four. If the King is killed, players of the court can nominate themselves to take his place. Members of the royal family get first chance to step forward.
Blue Dragon Killers and Investigative classes cannot target the King, and neither the Cult nor Unseen is aware of his allegiance. The only way to ensure the King’s loyalty is to use your social deduction skills or kill him and seat a loyal member of your faction onto the throne.
In Throne of Lies, there are two distinct enemy factions: the Cult and the Unseen, but only one faction will appear in any game. Before members of the Blue Dragon can eliminate the opposition, they must determine which faction they are up against.
Both the Unseen and Cult factions have the power to convert their enemies into allies. Even a trusted friend that has already been vetted by your abilities can become an enemy. The Blue Dragon must always be suspicious.
The Unseen will always start the game with an Assassin and The Mastermind. The Cult will always have a Cult Leader and a second loyal subject. The makeup of the faction will rapidly shift and evolve from there. Different evil classes have their own day and night abilities that can empower and protect their leader, alter and negate the Blue Dragon’s abilities or stifle their investigation.
Just as you can never trust your allies, you often cannot trust the information you receive.
Class Types
There are 6 types to help understand a class without reading their abilities:
Killer classes can kill opposing faction members.
Offensive classes can disrupt their foes directly with their abilities.
Investigative classes can use their abilities to reveal clues about the class, faction or class type of other players.
Social classes can use the chat system and social abilities to forge allies or disrupt communication between players.
Special classes, such as The King or The Mastermind, do not belong to another class type because they have unique abilities to shape the game.
Support classes aid and defend other players by healing them from poisoning/injury or other supportive abilities, such as assisting another bypass immunities.
Classes
Casual Game Mode
In the Casual game mode, around eight to ten players will be members of the Blue Dragon. The Blue Dragon in the normal game mode is guaranteed to spawn The Prince.
If the Unseen is in the game, they will spawn with an Assassin and a Mastermind. The Sheriff is sometimes spawned in these games.
If the Cult is in the game, they will spawn with a Cult Leader and an Invoker, a Ritualist or a Seeker. The Paladin is sometimes spawned in these games.
The Prince is the most powerful Blue Dragon class, having the ability to imprison people during the night (preventing all visits to them, but occupying them) and try to find the bad guys and execute them.
Players who are not assigned to the Blue Dragon, Unseen or Cult will be neutral.
The King will spawn in every game, no matter whether there is Unseen or Cult and is a member of a random faction, without anyone else knowing their faction.
Game Phases/Flow
Each day within Throne of Lies is broken down into two phases: the day phase and the night phase. The game begins during the day. When the counter at the top of the screen reaches zero, the night phase begins. The game continues this way until the victory conditions are met.
While every player has abilities during the night, only some classes have day abilities. Regardless of class, each player may only use one ability per phase.
Game Start:
Every player begins the game seated at the roundtable. The King will be revealed to everyone in the player panel at the right of the screen. Members of the Blue Dragon and neutral characters will not see the class of any other player. Members of the Unseen or Cult will see who their allies are in the player panel.
Day:
During the day phase, players can discuss their investigation, use their day abilities and accuse others of treason. At the end of the day, one player may be put up for execution and the entire court will decide their fate.
At the beginning of ensuing day phases, players will learn which players were killed during the night. Those players’ classes will be revealed and every player will be able to see their logbook. If the killer left a death note, that will also be revealed. Players can access these documents at any time via the player panel.
If the King does not survive the night or was executed for treason, the self-nomination process begins. Players with royal blood, such as The Noble and The Drunk, have the opportunity to step up first. If there are multiple candidates for King, all players will vote on the next King. If two consecutive votes are taken and no King is crowned, a power vacuum is created and there will be no King for the rest of the game.
Night:
During the night phase, members of the evil faction will congregate in secret to discuss their findings and plot their next moves. This can include killing members of the Blue Dragon or converting them to their faction. They can also use their night abilities to disrupt the abilities of other players and leave them with false information.
Members of the Blue Dragon will return to their own rooms at night. Here they can use their night abilities to investigate, protect, heal or occupy other players in an effort to bolster their faction or determine the allegiance of others. Some classes, such as The Psychic will be able to talk to other players at night.
Players will be notified of certain actions that were taken against them. Some abilities have priority over others (For example: if The Assassin tries to assassinate The Butler, and at the same time The Butler tries to occupy the Assassin, The Butler's action will be resolved first and The Assassin will be occupied, leaving him unable to kill the Butler).
Are you dead?
Death does not end your game in Throne of Lies. Dead players will sit in the graveyard as spectators. The Psychic can speak with the dead at night to gain clues and The Physician can even revive one Blue Dragon member per game. The dead are still eligible for victory if their faction wins the match and can earn gold by betting on who they think will be executed on the following day.
